Brief Description:  Log Books

An important part of the build is complying with all the CASA Regulations, including having a means for recording daily pre-flight and landing details, as well as having an approved Aircraft Maintenance Log Book and Maintenance Plan.

As far as daily records go, most people just certify the daily pre-flight inspection, and number of landings, directly in the Maintenance Release. It's mandatory to write these two entries there anyway, so this is the simplest method. But I want to be able to record a lot more detail than just that, and maintain a complete history of every flight, fuel and oil added, fuel/oil consumption, places landed, plus any notes regarding the flight. So I made up a Daily Flight Log booklet which will be kept in the cockpit.

Every aircraft also needs an approved Maintenance Log Book, and although I have one that I got from SAAA, I find it a little less profesisonal than I'd like, and very generic, so again, I made my own. I had to do some research into the CASA Civil Aviation Orders (CAO's), and in particular CAO 100.5, to check the requirements, but this wasn't so hard. The SAAA log was also a good starting point. When I'm happy with the end result I'll get it professionally printed and bound.

In addition to these two books, I've also been working on my Maintenance Plan which includes full detail of 25hr, 50hr and 100hr inspections. Again, rather than use one of the standard checklists available, I'm writing up a plan that is specific to my aircraft, and with a lot more detail. I actually enjoy doing this sort of thing so it's no chore to spend a few hours here and there in the evenings.
