Brief Description:  2: Cockpit Rollbar Mounting Bolt Spacers

I did some work today on the canopy roll bar mounting bolts. The roll bar is bolted in place with two bolts on each side of the cockpit, and since the underside of the mounting surface is not flat, there needs to be a small shaped spacer between the bolted surface, and the nut/washer.

This is all well and good on the drawings, and the instructions just say to make the spacer and bolt it all together ....... easy right ...... but trouble is there is very limited acess to this area, effectively making the task of positioning the spacer, washer and nut on the rear bolt nigh on impossible. It all needs to be done inside a small c-section of aluminium, with the open side of the "c" facing the cockpit wall. There is only a very small gap to get your fingers in, and mine just don't work!

After dropping the spacer, nut and/or washer for the millionth time, I decided to taking a leaf out of mate Pete's book, and cut away a portion of the c-section bottom flange (I noticed this on Pete's RV-7A when I last flew with him). The picture below is as good as I could get trying to show what I did.

With the hole now under the bolt location, I could then get much better access. I decided to glue the spacer in place with some tank sealant, that way I only need to juggle the nut and washer when I want to fiddle with these bolts.
