This afternoon I started mounting the nav/strobe lights to the leading edge recesses on each wing tip. The lights are held in place by a single screw, however I didn't want to fit a nutplate straight to the fibreglass tips, so instead I made up some custom brackets from scrap aluminium.
I made two identical brackets for each light, with the idea being that one will go on the outside, and one on the inside, thereby sandwiching the fibreglass. This should result in a more robust fitting.
I will first glue the pieces in place with tank sealant before rivetting, just to stop the thin aluminium pieces from possibly buckling (and looking unsightly). I'll let the sealant cure overnight and rivet in place tomorrow.
In the meantime I also started looking into how the perspex wing tip lenses are fitted. I'll try to get these done tomorrow as well, but for now I cut the two halves from the single perspex piece using my dremel.
