Brief Description:  1: Pitot Tube Bracket

Today I continued on with the pitot tube mounting bracket in the left wing. I thought I'd get the hard part over with early and assembled the mounting bracket and wing skin with cleco's, then set about match drilling new holes in the skin, to align with the pitot mounting bracket. Since the bracket is on the inside of the wing, then there's no alternative but to match drill from the inside.

I am really, really glad I spent the money on a right-angled drill set. I don't know how I would have done this job without it. Check my first picture below.

After match drilling the attachment holes I could then take the skin off the wing, with the bracket still attached, flip it over, and cut out the hole for the pitot tube bracket. I drilled a couple large holes at either end of the cut-out and then using a cut-off wheel in my dremel, I made a large opening between the two. I then used a rotary grinding bit in my drill to cut away the excess. After a smooth over with a mini sanding drum, and a rub with some fine sandpaper, it came out very nice.

I then primed the mounting bracket and, once dry, riveted it in place. The third photo below shows the grey bracket in place, and the white pitot mounting support temporarily screwed in place.
