Brief Description:  Brackets and Fairings

First up today I assembled the left and right inboard aileron hinge brackets. I used my hand squeezer on most of the rivets, and they turned out very nice. I've cleco'd the two assembled brackets to the respective wing spars, however I can't rivet them until I get the Service Bulletin parts from Vans. There's some extra reinforcing pieces that need to go behind these brackets to prevent the possibility of cracks forming. Sounds important, so I might just wait.

Next up I tackled the problem of acid etching and alodining the two long flap fairings. They're too long even for my alodining trough, so I went to the local Mitre 10 and got myself a 2.2m length of 90mm stormwater pipe. I glued a fixed cap on one end, and a screwed cap on the other. This worked a treat. I filled about 2/3 full with Alumibrite, put a long fairing piece inside, then screwed on the cap and laid flat. A bit over a minute later I took the piece out and rinsed it off under the hose. Same again for the other piece before then emptying the Alumibrite, rinsing the pipe, and doing it all over again with Alodine. It proved a bit difficult handling the long parts, and I rubbed some of the alodine off just getting them out of the pipe, but otherwise it all worked quite well.

I decided to alodine the shorter aileron fairings in my normal troughs, as they're a bit easier to use than the pipe.

After alodining I then primed with 2-pack epoxy. I'll wait until the aileron hinge brackets are riveted in place before fitting the fairings.
