Brief Description:  Aileron and Flap Fairings

I started off today by riveting the left and right outboard aileron hinge brackets in place. Had a small drama with one rivet, so drilled the head off and started again.

I then started assembling the two inboard hinge brackets however in my haste I realised that I'd missed countersinking a couple holes on one of the bracket pieces. Bugger. The only way to correct it properly was to drill out the four rivets I'd already set, which I did very carefully.

When getting the bracket pieces apart I also made a mess of the primed surfaces. It looked quite horrible so I decided to put both parts over the scothbrite wheel and take them back to bare metal. This then meant cleaning, alodining and priming all over again, but at least now they look much better. This set me back about three hours.

Next up I then went onto fitting the flap and aileron fairings, which was quite straight forward. I match drilled all the holes, dimpled and countersunk where required, and smoothed/deburred edges and holes. The flap fairings are quite long so I'll need to see if the local hardware store has anything I can use to make an alodining bath out of. Unfortunately that'll have to wait until tomorrow, when they're open.

I finished off my day by making a start on the aileron push rods, but this came to an abrupt halt after just the first instruction...... "assemble the W-917 and W-918 pushrods as shown in DWG 9". Only trouble is, drawing 9 shows just an overall view of the wing with no detail for the pushrods. I stared at the drawing for ages, looking for something that I wasn't seeing. At the very least I need to know how long the pushrods need to be, but for the life of me even this basic level of detail just was not apparent. I put it down to tiredness and decided to call it a day.

When I got home I did some research and found an entry on Smitty's RV website which solved the mystery. The detail is actually on drawing 15!
