One of the show participants brought a rebuilt Gnome rotary engine on a demo stand and ran it for the crowd. They have a unique sound and smell of castrol oil. Neat little engine but I think a modern engine of the correct size, weight and power would be better for everyday flying. A number of aircraft had Warner Scarab radials which is a good choice. And as I said before, the Rotec radial (R-2800 or R-3600) are good choices.
The Fokker D-VIII below was full scale and was powered with a Continental radial engine. The Fokker was one of three full scale planes that flew in from Colorado. They flew the trip in hops of about 1 hr 15 mins due to the endurance of the Fokker Dr-I Tri-Plane that was part of the gaggle. The D-VIII was accompanied by a Ranger powered D-VII and a Lycoming (horiz opposed 4 cylinder) powered Dr-I.
