Brief Description:  Preparing tank parts and paint test

While waiting for my most recent Van's order, I decided to prepare some of the tank parts to be used in the final assembly. Specifically, I cut the rib reinforcement plates and rings. The parts were then deburred and polished using the scotchbrite wheel. One of the std tank access plates was also prepared. The other tank will have an inverted fuel pick-up so it will use the solid access plate previously ordered.

The rest of the work session was devoted to experimenting with some PPG wash primer and my Harbor Freight gun. I had seem this primer mentioned in someone's website and had originally planned to use it when priming was required. In an earlier attempt, however, I was not able to get satisfying results. Not wanting to be intimidated by the primer and gun, I decided to do some further testing today.

Bottom line, I am still not satisfied with the results and much prefer the finish obtained with the Dupli-Color rattle can. Wish I could get the same Dupli-Color paint in quarts that comes in the rattle cans. There is a B-17 restoration project at a local airport that is using a primer that seems to match Dupli-Color. I think it's time to go see those folks and find out exactly what product thay are using.
