Platenut Installation (Countersinking Spar)
Page 3

The six platenuts at the spar root are installed at an angle so it was necessary to make an additional jig. Once the jig was fabricated, the earlier process was repeated until all the nutplate screw holes were completed. I then changed to the #40 countersink cutter and prepared all the nutplate rivet attach points. The rivet holes could be processed much quicker since no jig was necessary.

My plan for tomorrow is to fabricate another jig for the nutplates that will fasten the inspection access plates to the aft edge of the spar flange. These nutplates are a different size than the tank fasteners installed today. The nutplates are very close to the edge of the spar flange so considerable care must be taken in determining the countersink depth. The inspection plate will be drilled and dimpled as appropriate and used in determining the proper depth (just enough for a flush fit but maintaining the necessary margin from the edge).
