Brief Description:  Primer - Part 2

Image 1 below shows the vertical stabilizer skeleton with the forward spar primed. When first building the stabilizer, the forward spar was not primed. I was not happy with the riveting on the skin so later I decided to rework it. Of course, that meant drilling out all the rivets, cleaning up all the holes, match drilling the new skin, etc. I decided to prime the spar because of all the extra handling.

The second image shows an interior view of the horizontal stabilizer. I took particular care in the handling of the skins and spars to ensure they were not scratched during assembly. Once the ribs and forward spars were riveted and before closing up the assembly with the rear spar, the interior surfaces were wiped clean with acetone to remove any fingerprints, oily residues, etc. In the photo the only primed part is the rib.

To date, my primer of choice has been Dupli-Color from Dupli-Color Products Company in Cleveland, Ohio. This product is available at most auto supply stores and ranges in price from 5 to 7 dollars. I have only found it in 12oz rattle cans so it would not be cost effective if priming large numbers of parts. It is handy, however, for touch ups and the smaller jobs.
