Brief Description:  Future paint scheme - Introduction

It will be quite some time before a decision must be made concerning the paint and trim scheme for the finished airplane. However, I have decided to document my ideas and thoughts regarding paint in my builders log as they occur. Being a Navy veteran, I would like to come up with a Navy design but to date I haven't found a paint and marking scheme that lends itself to the shape of the RV-8.

On the other hand, there are numerous schemes that I like based upon the P-51s of WWII. In particular, I like the polished finishes with bright colors and patterns. Yes I know, most builders advise to paint rather than polish. I need to pursue this question further with some builders who chose to go with a polished finish.

For now, let me list some of the paint and trim characteristics I particularly like on P-51s. First, there are the invasion stripes. I like both the stripes on the wings and the bands that usually wrap under the fuselage from the bottom of the stars and bars. Regarding the stars and bars, I prefer the two color versions (dark blue/black and white). I like the two color tail numbers that stretch across the rudder and vertical stabilizer (usually white numbers on colored rudder turning to black on the polished vertical stabilizer. Also, I like the large letters denoting unit that usually appear next to the stars and bar. Regarding nose art to accompany a name, I am undecided.

One of the first P-51's that caught my eye as possible inspiration was Petie 2nd. The scheme on this bird has some definite possibilities. My name is Pete and the RV-8 will be my second owned airplane. The unit markings on Petie 2nd are HO M (could be changed to RV 8 or my initials). Some photos from Oshkosh are included below.
