Brief Description:  Fitting and installation of engine cowl

Today's session in the shop was to begin the installation of the engine cowl. First step was to cut and install the various piano hinges that will attach the cowl halves around the perimeter of the fuselage firewall.

I am not as happy with the shop instructions and drawings for this task. The instructions are a bit sketchy and the drawings are not detailed enough regarding the hinge placement. I did my best to position the hinges per the drawings but I think some final trimming of the hinges will be required unless the trim on the cowl corrects some overall alignment. Although the baggage door was fabricated and fitted some time ago, I am not entirely happy with it either. It needed to be installed before the cowl is fitted and it seems to be just a little snug. I think it will require some trimming along the forward edge later. It will, however, be ok for now.

I did decide to fasten the lower corners of the cowl with flanges, platenuts, and screws rather than short pieces of hinge. A fellow builder highly recommended the mod. Anyway, I fabricated the pieces and formed them to fit the curve.

Finally, I layed the upper cowl half on the fuselage. I still need to figure out a way to temporarily fasten it to the spinner so it can be positioned exactly the same way each time it is removed for trimming (this is a repetive process... mark, trim, fit, mark, trim, fit, etc.).
