Brief Description:  Hanging the engine

I finally managed to get the engine mounted today after a series of trials and errors. My first attempt ended in failure and a wasted day in the shop. I managed to get three of the bolts in place but was not able to get the final bolt installed. The day ended with removal of the engine and some on-line research trying to determine of there was any alternative procedures for installing Lycomings on Dynafocal 1 mounts. I actually came up with four different procedures but in the end tried a fifth that a local builder suggested.

On day two I removed the steel mount from the fuselage and tried attaching it to the engine reasoning that hoisting and attaching the entire assembly to the four fuselage bolts would be easier since they are not angled. I did manage to get the Dynfocal mount attached to the engine but then found that there is a small 45 deg angled fitting for the oil pressure line that has to go on the back of the engine before it is mounted. That fitting was not on the engine so once again I had to remove the mount.

Finally, I got the oil pressure fitting installed, the mount reattached, and the entire assembly hoisted and attached to the fuselage but not without another problem. In this case, my Harbor Freight shop hoist failed to riase the engine to the proper height. So, I had to bleed the hydraulic ram and add some fluid before it would operate properly. In any case, the engine is installed. Tomorrow I will install the proper number of washers and torque all the bolts.
