Brief Description: Purchased and assembled shop crane
I should be getting an engine delivery any day now so it was time to acquire a shop crane to aid in unloading the engine from a pickup and mounting it on the airframe. Could probably have rented a unit or borrowed one from another builder but the cost of a 1 ton hoist from Harbor Freight seemed more convenient and potentially cost effective.
Anyway, I did the typical due diligence by reading all the reviews on the product which, by the way, were not overly encouraging. In fact, it only got about a 2.5-3.0 eval out of a possible 5.0. Most of the complaints were related to bad packaging, missing parts, misalignment of bolt holes, and poor assembly instructions. I almost passed on the purchase but then a couple days ago HF sent me a coupon for $95 off the list price. That made the crane $135 from a store that is just 4 miles down the road. So, I went and looked at the floor display and decided to take the risk.
I haven't hoisted the engine yet but I can say all the negative reviews related to assembly were not true of the product I purchased. All the parts were present and the number of components is small enough that assembly was no problem with or without written instructions. I thought it went together easily. The only thing I did different was add some washers under all the bolt heads. While it certainly wasn't necessary, I like to have flat washers under bolt heads when the bolts and holes are not tight tolerance. Anyway, I think the shop crane will be perfect for handling a Lycoming.
