Brief Description:  Rear cockpit stick cover plate

The stock RV-8 has a large area around the rear stick that is open to the bottom fuselage skin. Like most builders, I want a cover to close off access below the main cabin floor so items can't accidentally get dropped into the spaces where the control linkages are located and possibly jam a control component. Most of the vendors providing RV interiors will supply this panel with an integral stick boot matching the seat upholstery. Unfortunately, the price is high and I am not crazy about the method of installation (most use velcro to secure the panels to the interior).

The panel looked like an opportunity to save some dollars so I decided to fabricate my own. I began as usual by looking at the various forums, builder sites, and vendor offerings and then made a cardboard pattern incorporating the best ideas. When I was happy with the pattern it was traced onto some .025 aluminum and the cutting, bending, and fitting began.

The panel was match drilled to some existing holes in the floor (had to replace four rivets with platenuts). I also installed four platenuts across the bracket that supports the back of the stick control tube. I still have to fabricate a ring to attach the stick boot which Connie hasn't made up yet. I also need to cut a hole for the cabin air vent but the hardware hasn't arrived and I don't want to get the hole the wrong size or in the wrong location. The panel also needs to be primed and painted. Overall, I am happy with the results.
