I had the pleasure of hosting a group of air force veterans (Sampson AFB Reunion) on a tour of the restoration workshop of the NMUSAF today and since I haven't commented recently on the shop projects I thought an update might be of interest. I have included some pictures of six of the more interesting projects currently underway.
The first, shown below, is the fabrication of a rudder for an A-25 Shrike, better known as the Curtiss-Wright SB2C Helldiver of Navy fame in WWII. The Shrike we have in the shop had no rudder when recovered so we borrowed one recently discovered by the Navy and agreed to build the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola a new rudder in exchange. We are currently building at least two copies, one for us and one for the Navy. Since the original metal is in such bad condition, the staff is replicating all new parts.
