Brief Description:  Why I'm building an RV-7

Welcome to my builders log for a Van's Aircraft RV-7. The purpose of this site is to document the build process to meet the FAA's requirements and to also share the experience with anyone that may be interested. This is not a "how to" site and don't take my comments or processes as advice. This is a disclaimer. Read this site for entertainment or time killing value only, not for detailed instruction on how to build an airplane.

Building my own airplane was a dream that was sparked when I first attended the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. My parents finally gave in to my incesent begging and took me to the show when I was twelve years old. It cost a fair amount of money even back then and thanks to mom and dad for lighting the fire!

I have been facinated by flying machines for as long as I can remember and still can't resist looking up at an airplane that passes over head.

My first flight lesson was in 1993 while living in Fremont, NE. I was transferred to Beloit, WI shortly after that and flying was put on hold for a couple years due to buying our first home, having our second child, etc. It was 1995 before I had another lesson and I was able to log three hours total before learning of another transfer to Aurora, IL. My promotion and $40/week pay raise didn't go far and flying was put on hold again as our mortgage doubled and we had our third child after the move to the Chicago area. In 1998 I resumed lessons at the Dupage airport and completed my single engine land, visual flight rules ticket in June of 2000.

My wife Diane, who I don't thank enough, was very supportive which enabled me to get my license while spending a lot of money that most women would have thought better spent on expenses needed to raise a young family. We had a good lifestyle, but there were definately sacrifices made to allow me to pursue my passion. It is very much the same now, with extra money being siphoned off to fund this project. Without the support of Diane,
