Brief Description:  Visited a couple new airports, bought an R/C Cub

While in the Traverse City, Michigan area for business this week I visited a couple airports. On Wednesday night I headed west from town and ended up at the Empire Airport. Empire is a small town on the coast of Lake Michigan. The airport is owned by the township and there were some guys flying R/C at the intersection of the two grass runways.

I made my way over to visit with them and had a nice time on a beautiful night. Claude Fields is the caretaker of the field and we had a nice talk after the other guys left. He and the other guys raved about a particular Super Cub that would be great for Colten, Tanner, and I to learn to fly R/C with. I picked one up on sale at the TC hobby store and it looks like it will be a lot of fun.

On Thursday night, I drove north out of town and ended up at the Torchport Airport. It also has two grass runways and is cut out of the woods between Lake Michigan and Torch Lake. It is a beautiful place, but the economy has slowed/stopped any home construction. There is one model home that was built four years ago that still hasn't been sold. The airport itself is for sale also. This would be a great retirement spot for the summers and I'll probably kick myself for not buying a lot there for the $19,900 they are currently asking. Well, probably not, but it is a nice place.
