Brief Description:  Finished rudder prep and primed everything.

Today I worked on and off throughout the day between projects around the house. I finished prepping all of the parts, deburring, dimpling, etc. I then primed everything and am now ready to start riveting the thing together.

Neighbor Don stopped by to check on the kid and helped dimple a few holes. The rudder ribs get very narrow at the end and the hand squeezer with dimple dies wouldn't fit between the flanges of the ribs. When buying my tools from Cleaveland, they said I should buy this low profile dimple tool or whatever they call it. I mounted it to my old bench and Don held the rib while I hit the male die with a ball pean hammer. It took a few hits but did a nice job. Don said he should dial 9 - 1 on the telephone. I didn't know what he meant, 9 - 1.....he said it was so that when I hit my fingers with the hammer, he would only have to dial one more "1" for the ambulance to come. Finally, a guy cornier than me.

Don retired from United a few years ago flying the DC-10. We were talking and I brought up the DC-10 accident and crash landing in Sioux City, Iowa several years ago is which many passengers and crew tragically died, but many also survived. He said the pilots did a heck of a job getting the plane down in a more or less out of control condition as they lost all hydraulics when the number two engine came apart and severed all three redundant hydraulic systems lines making them useless within a short time. They only had the thrust from the engines on each main wing to control climb or decent, right or left turn, and airspeed. Don said more or less in passing "Yeah, I flew that very same airplane the day before the accident". It makes a person think about how even small decisions or changes in fate can make a big impact on your life.
