Brief Description: mounting and using the arbor press
|
|
After talking with Ev Young yesterday, about how he had used an arbor press to squeeze the rivets on the spars, I decided to get my own arbor press. I drilled a hole in a handy steel plate to hold the rivet set, and I polished the end of the arbor press rack to serve as a bucking bar substitute. I tried several rivet squeezes on my latest practice piece. Ev had pointed out to me that a lot of my rivets were too short, and once I corrected that problem, the shop heads started looking much better. The smilies are gone, and the few problems I still have with shop heads, I think are due to the practice piece moving as the rivet was squeezed. With the spars themselves, I think the larger mass, and better attention to supporting and clamping, I can eliminate that movement.
