I cut out and started bending some aluminum sheet to make a transition from the rectangular air filter to the round tube that supplies induction air to the carburator. I was doing this now mainly just so I could visualize exactly where the front edge of the cowl needs to be in order to remain clear of the propeller circle but also be far enough forward to give a nice straight airflow into the carb. But as I was looking at this thing, the thought occurs to me that this would be a very nice little practice project, to make this box out of fiberglass. I could use the box I am making now, to make a plug mold out of fiberglass, and then use that fiberglass mold to make an air box out of fiberglass. The angles involved might make it difficult or impossible to get the part separated from the mold, but I do like the idea of practicing on a small part before tackling the whole big cowl.
