Brief Description:  Drilling out the HS405/710-714/702/403

Angle drill is in, time to build on. First hole with the angle drill was fine, but it seemed to take forever due to the thickness. Second hole at the top, I still cannot figure out what happened. I used the threaded drill that came with the angle drill and it seemed to wobble and hop up and down. It produced 2 holes in the HS-405 rib. The other pieces were fine. I ordered a new HS-405 rib from Vans for $13.00. My tech counselor said that I could just drill it out to a -5 and put the larger rivet in there. Too late, part is on the way. I also spoke with tech support at Vans, they said pretty much the same. The aircraft is built like a tank and a minor error like this could be corrected without any worry.

The same goes for some of the edge distances on the 405's. They get abit close but again Vans says that there are alot of rivets holding this together, build on.

Vans has been great with the support and I can't say enough for the tech counselor assistance either. If you get in a bind, call.

When I drilled the new part I removed the threaded drill bit an put a "sharp" 6 inch bit in the chuck and it worked without a problem.
