Brief Description:  Fuel and Oil Doors

The plans were not very descriptive regarding the fuel or oil door openings. Also after making the fuel door opening from aluminum which sat on top and overlaped the openingI really wasn't happy with its look and felt it could easily be a problem if it flew open in flight. I wanted it to fit flush or almost flush with the surface of the cowl. I had already cut the fuel door opening in a way I could not use the material cut away as the door. I had not yet cut the oil door so I cut it in a way I could use the cut away material as the door.

I had a friend who built a fiberglass airplan so I asked his help (and material) to build a retainer undernear the edge of the openings so that the cut away material could lay on it and be almost flush with the cowl. This worked well, In addition he was able to assistm me in covering the fuel doom aluminum with a thin coating of fiberglass making it look more presentable to me. Of course before coverng the aluminum door had to be cut down from it's original size to fit flush.

I used the piano hing on the fuel door and fabricated a hidden hinge for the oil door. I used a butterfly southco latch on the fuel door and I purchased and installed a push buton latch for the oil door.
