Brief Description:  Installing the elevators

Today, although I finished installing the com antenna , re-did the RG400 cables and re-routed them properly, the main task was to install the elevators. Before going on this, I finished drilling the holes for the vertical stab.

Once that was done, I hung the left elevator first and leveled it by locking the long arm with the horizontal stab. That way with the fuselage in a level position I could visualize if the shape of the elevator was a continuity of the Horizontal Stab. I had set the hinge bearings at 13/16" as per the plan but you can see in the first picture that the bearing center in relation to the bellcrank would be very close to the 1" tubing weld. It would not be as per the plan as far as that hole location.

The most logical solution was to unscrew those hinge bearings by 3/16" and that worked as you can see in the second picture. I then installed the other elevator using the same dimensions I used for the hinge bearings for the left elevator. What I wanted to see is if the 2 Bellcrank were at the same position and they were.

I removed the right one, marked the left , and drilled a pilot hole. I used that pilot hole to mark the other elevator Bellcrank and drill a pilot hole. Last I drilled them both separately up to -4 bolt size and that is now, the center pivot point for the elevators.

What I am not telling you is all minor other adjustments that were required such as the bellcrank hole was too tight on the right side and needed to be enlarged. Tomorrow I will put it all together again and attach the rudder and also the push rod to the bellcranks so I can test it from the cockpit!
