Brief Description: Skin dimpling & fixing a problem ! An other one !
I have not documented it yet, But I ran into an issue dimpling the rear tank baffle, because the holes were too close where the rear tank baffle turns 90 degree. Long story short, the hand dimpler I am using, despite careful use,has stretched the baffle in a corner enough to make a tiny hole. In fact, it was not a hole but a crack. I took a few hours to calm down and figure an appropriate fix. I will add pictures later but needless to say that I was not happy.
This got me thinking that those that are able to build an airplane error free must have either built 3-4 RV before being able to do one error free or it has to be a pre-punched kit.
At any rate, nothing of that issue is structural but my pride had a hard time with that error, especially that I was really careful and was taking all the time I had to do this.
Now, it is a hole as I had to drill 2 small #41 holes to stop the crack from going anywhere and then I cleaned out the hole to insure it was free of bur or sharp edge. The sencond piture shows the repair patch I intend to use to block off that ugly hole !
You can see that I dimpled the rivet row that will attach the skin to the baffle. That is an error and should have been a countersink. But my original plan did not mention anything about that and I forgot that detail which I read on the newer PDF plan set I had bought from Vans .
