Brief Description:  Rudder Skeleton Prep 1

There are three pieces on the rudder you must fabricate from the aluminum strips that is provided in the kit. The R-717 is a spacer that gets sandwich between spar, R-802PP and the rudder horn, R-405PD. The other is R-716, rudder bottom attach strip, both were very simple to fabricate. I went ahead and broke all the edges of all rudder skeleton parts and labeled them accordingly.

The rudder horn brace, R-710, comes already bent to shape, however there are two areas noted on the plans that must be trimmed down. As any part in the kit Vans has small notches that you use to draw a line between and then cut the aluminum to the line. Time spent reading other builder site, many have had to reorder this part due to trimming the sides too much and not having the minimum edge once the holes are drilled.

Knowing this information from others that has gone before me, I thought I was good to go. Due to the shape of R-710, I could not use the band saw, so with lines drawn, I took the snips and started trimming. The picture below shows one side after cutting and the other side the edges have been smoothed using the Scotch-Brite wheel.

After both sides were trimmed and the edges broken and smoothed, I inserted the R-710 into position, and clecoed it in place. From what I was able to see, it looked fine, so I matched drilled the #40 holes using R-704 as the guide. I then disassembled everything so I could get a look at the edge distance. Holy crap, I did exactly what I was trying to avoid. As you can see from the picture the holes are way too close to the edge. A call to Van’s tomorrow will fix that, oh well, one more scrap piece to play with.
