Brief Description:  Sonex Tech Support Submission

The below emails were prepared and submitted to Cris Nash of the Sonex Technical Support Staff to help resolve which way to proceed from here with installing the lower cowling exhaust tunnels:

One more thing I forgot to ask about as a possible solution direction…

If the below situation isn’t the best or most practical solution, would it be a possible solution to combine the two exhaust tunnels into one larger combined exhaust tunnel, and position the single tunnel on the passenger side of the centerline? Is it truly the same to have one tunnel with the same opening size as the two tunnels combined? This would be a 3.5” x 13” lipped opening to a single 15” deep tunnel? If a single tunnel would work, would it have to be as deep as the 15” depth of the two individual tunnels, provided the opening still provided the same 45.5 sq in open cooling air outlet as the two individual tunnels?

Last thought on the single larger tunnel vs the two smaller tunnels… would it be any better to make it a smaller single tunnel with both exhaust pipes running to it, and the extra sq in of cooling air exhaust opening being added back at the side vents?

One thing I’m wondering about with both pipes going to a single tunnel on the passenger side of the centerline is that might allow the pipe path from the 3-to-1 header step-down to have less sharp angles as the travel to the exhaust tunnel.

Thanks so much for your help on this issue, Chris. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and solution opinions.

Sincerely,

Chuck Bennett

Subject: Some questions about the lower cowling exhaust tunnels.

Hi Chris,

Chuck Bennett here. We haven’t spoken much, so I doubt you remember me. I’m building a Sonex-B Quickbuild kit, Tricycle gear, with a new Jabiru 3300 Gen 4. Aircr
