Brief Description: Installing Final Main Gear Leg Fairings.

Installed final left and right leg fairings. Used previously drilled hinge pin holes in the wheel fairing mounting plate, but had to drill a second hole in the fuselage bottom to have the pin in the correct position so the tops of the fairing were placed on the fuselage in symetrical positions. I placed a piece of blacked-out painter's tape on the fuselage bottom over where I knew the hole would be going, then I installed the test fairings. I inserted a sharpened hinge pin in the upper hinge segment that was long enough to hit the fuselage bottom skin, and marked the blackened tape to show where to drill to keep the current upper fairing position on the fuselage bottom skin.
I drilled the fuselage bottom skin hinge pin holes as marked. I then installed the final leg fairings on both sides and marked for trimming at the bottom, and a cutout for the brake fittings. I removed, trimmed, and reinstalled the fairings. This cutout will need further clearance provided at the brake fitting when I actually run the brake lines, and this will be custom fit at that time.
The 6061 T6 0.025" aluminum used for the final fairings is significantly stiffer than the cheaper 0.020" hardware store aluminum sheet. The final fairings were much harder to bend, and did not take the exact same set that the easier to form test material did, so there was a slight difference in how the fairings fit against the fuselage bottom. There is some very slight gap at the fuselage bottom skin, but I am accepting the fit as-is for now. It appears I can squeeze a little more bend in the fairings, and close the gap, but when released, it springs back out, where the test fairing did not, and they held the closer fit. This may be something I re-visit at a later date.
