Brief Description:  First Start-Up!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been flying for many years, both helicopters and fixed wing. I’m instrument rated, and have hundreds and hundreds of hours in a technically advance aircraft. And yet…at this moment, I’m a complete moron. I’ve spent a year and a half, almost every day working towards this moment, and I’m nervous, excited, and sicker than I can ever remember being in my life! I haven’t thrown up in the fairway in 36 hours, but I am still incredibly sick and trying to hold it together. (Have I mentioned how much I love Tom?!).

When we finally got her pushed out of the hanger, I was like a dog watching television. I needed Tom to walk me through just about every step, and the fact that he has the very same helicopter was huge. I haven’t created a personalized start-up checklist like I did with the 300cb and cbi’s I used to fly, so Tom walked me through it step-by-step.

I gave her three full throttle turns to prime the engine, and then I tried the starter. It really hadn’t dawned on me that the starter might not even work, or that I even wired the E-mags or alternator correctly. That said, I switched on the master, and then turned on the strobe lights and engaged the starter. The starter kicked right on, but after a few seconds it was clear that the engine required more fuel. I stopped and gave it three more full turns. I hit the starter again, and after 18 months and all the long hours, she came to life! I couldn’t believe it! I turned on the remaining required switches and intently listened and watched everything that was happening.

I ran the engine for the required 20 minutes in the Lycoming break-in instructions at the varying RPMs, and Tom inspected the engine and everything else I couldn’t see from the cabin. He also took a great 360-degree video of it running, and Safari has it on their Facebook page if anyone is interested in seeing it.
