Brief Description:  Panel and Console Layout

I have been trying to finalize my instrument panel in the pod, and also complete the final layout of gauges and switches on the center console. Last week before Christmas I was able to reach out to a couple of instrument suppliers and manufactures to inquire about the potential modification of two gyro instruments that I would like to add to my helicopter. These are not typically installed on the Safari, but are both found on the 300cbi and R22. Both the attitude indicator and the turn coordinator must be adjusted to compensate for the tilt of the panel in order to report accurately. You can buy zero tilt and 8 degree tilt off the shelf, but I am trying to see if I can get a 15 degree tilt needed for my pod. If not, I will need to order the most tilt I can get and fabricate a wedge mount to take up the rest of the angle. I will cross that bridge when I come to it, but in the meantime I will wait to hear back from the companies once they return back to work after the first of the year.

While I’m waiting, I’m finishing the console and pod layout in order to get the labeling and new cutouts completed while the instruments are in order. In the end, I will be adding 4 additional switches and 4 additional gauges that I need to find room for. I will ask a buddy of mine from work to layout what I’ve drawn for the console on CAD, then take it to a local engraver to make to scale. I also tried to layout the switches in the order that they will be used to help with the preflight and run-up flows. And yes…I realize making cardboard cutouts of my gauges is a little over the top, but it really helped me visualize exactly where everything was going to be, and what my options were. It was honestly really helpful, and I think it actually helps me in the end.
