Brief Description:  Horiz. & Vert. Stabilizer Painting / Wire Mid-Boom

Horiz. & Vert. Stabilizer Painting / Wire Mid-Boom Beacon / Run Tail Rotor Control Cable / Run Tail Rotor Wire Group

As you may remember, I was able to drop off the remaining parts to Eddie my painter right after the first of the year. Eddie sent me a photo of the red parts hanging in his painting booth, so they must be getting close to completion. Once I pick them up, it’s going to be really exciting to bolt on the stabilizers because they are both major pieces, and also because of the color contrast to the black boom. I will also be able to apply my tail number to the helicopter, which will be a really cool milestone in the construction process.

I installed the tail rotor control cable through the boom and through the cabin. I measured the point I was going to drill the kick panel penetration by copying the hole in the cable stop for the pedals. I figured that would be a good way to make the cable parallel inside the cabin, but this turned out to be one of those lessons where you need to not get so focused on one path that you miss the bigger picture. If I was paying closer attention, I would have realized that I should have drilled the hole as close to the top of the carpet so the cable would lay down closer to the floor. I didn’t notice my mistake until the moment after I drilled the hole, so as a result, the hole is about ½” higher than I would like it to be. Clearly not the end of the world, but I lost a few hours of sleep that night because of my mistake.

I have seen many Safari builders use simple zip ties to hole the tail rotor control cable in place, but I believe that this component is arguably one of the most critical pieces of the helicopter and needs to be secured as such. Like my buddy Tom chose to do, I’m using adel clamps to hold the cable in place as it runs down the inside of the boom structure. Since the clamps are there for the cable anyway, I am also using those points to hold down and stand off the electrical wires for the navigations and strobe lights. I ran short of th
