Brief Description:  Rivet Floor Access Panels

After masking and priming the areas that are going to be face to face and permanently mounted, I riveted all of the nut plates onto the backing plate, then riveted the backing plate to the floor panel. Earlier, I had ordered various sizes of rivets in both length and width, so with the confirmation by a good rivet gauge I am able to simply go to the shelf and grab what I need. Obviously the nut plate rivets and the backing plate rivets are very different shapes and sizes. The piece came out very clean once everything was in place.

As I always do, I then chased the nut plates with a tap so the screws could be easily installed and removed repeatedly.

I am amazed at how stiff the floor is now, which was one of my big concerns. As you can see from the photo, the access is great, and because I cut the access holes to match the frame of the floor, the floor panel is as solid as a rock even with the access panels removed. Now that the project is complete, I have to say that this was the right thing to do. I can’t imagine not having this access, or having access that is too small to actually use.
