Brief Description:  Copilot Collective Well Fabrication

Ohhhhh....was this a fun day. (Can you smell the sarcasm?!)

I laid out the template on the sheet metal stock and then second guessed my measurements. I erased many of my lines and made the piece just a little bit bigger than the tempate. After hours of cutting and bending, I missed the width by just two milimeters, but there was no way to reuse or rebend the piece and save the integrity of the material. The result? Start all over again >:(

The second time I trusted my template and it came out the way it should. Again, I had to get creative with the bends using my welding table, clamps, blocks of wood, seamers, and a hammer. It's slow moving, but it works.

The other silver lining to having to remake the left pilot panel is that I can fabricate it in a manner to support the new control locations for the carb and cabin heat. My buddy Tom from PA and I discussed t, and we decided to locate the contols in the collective well rather than the center console where we would have to reach across our body to access the levers. It is much better to follow the recomendatons of Bruce from New Zeland and utilize the extra space in the collective well. In fact, I think I will also be locating my primer control in that location, but I will need to think about the pros and cons first. I will replace the call-out for a .032 thick floor panel in the well with the same thickness I'm usng for the seat panels. Should be pretty cool.

Tomorrow I will make some adjustments to the right upper panel and begin the remake of the left panel. I spent a few hours off the clock to clean the disaster that was my shop so I can get a fresh start in the morning.
