Brief Description:  Technical Question Elevator Trailing Edge RV-7

Question:

I have completed my elevator and forgot to install a blob of RTV silicone on the trailing edge as per the plans prelogue.

5.7 FOLDED TRAILING EDGES

“Prior to final riveting, place a dab of RTV or tank sealant about the size of a wad of chewing gum at the inside of the skin where the two stiffeners overlap near the trailing edge. This will tie the stiffeners together and prevent the skins from cracking at this point due to vibration.”

I understand this was originally required when the skin was thinner.

Now with a bit of effort and a snake camera, I think I could get a tube in there to apply silicon.

What do you advise?

Answer:

The addition of the RTV helps prevent the last rivet on the stiffeners from cracking over time. This was a problem with early kits like the RV-4. You are correct that the heavier skins make it far less susceptible to this cracking problem as well and arguably is sufficient on its own. You are not alone as many builders before you have forgotten this step before you. There is very little chance that you will have a problem if you chose to continue without adding the RV at this point.
