Rudder skin - back riveting - 3 hours Now I really feel like I'm back in the swing of things. I'll admit, after screwing up my first set of rudder skins, I was pretty bummed out and didn't want to work on the project much for the past month, but now I'm back in the saddle and ready to roll! Today I took one of my bad rudder skins and a stiffener and drilled a #40 hole between each hole that is already there (the enlarged #30 holes). Debur, dimple, then I had a part to practice back riveting on. It only took playing around with the shortest stiffener to get the hang of it. Dad and I then back riveted all the stiffeners to the right rudder skin that will be going on the plane - piece of cake. After that, I match drilled all the left rudder skin stiffeners to the skin, disassembled, and deburred. I was able to dimple the stiffeners, but will have to get to dimpling the skins next time. If I keep to my plan of working 3 days per week, I might be done with the rudder in 1.5 weeks. Left rudder skin, right elevator - 2 hours I started today dimpling the left rudder skin. Next I used Alumiprep on the skin and stiffeners, dried, and primed. 9/25/2007 Rudder - 2 hours Even though I only worked 2 hours today, it felt like a great accomplishment. First I back riveted all the stiffeners to the left rudder skin. Then I started clecoing together the rudder. I match drilled all the remaining holes for the trailing edge wedge, and skin to rib/spar attachments. I made the rudder horn brace and the attachment strips for the lower piece of fiberglass. 9/30/2007 Rudder debur & dimple - 6 hours Wow there are a lot of parts in the rudder! I spent my six hours today disassembling, deburring, dimpling, and machine countersinking. I had hoped to get to Alumiprep, Alodine where necessary, and prime, but that's going to have to wait for later this week. I got hung up on deciding how to dimple the holes near the small tips of the ribs for the rudder. I ended up cramming the vise-grip dimpler I have down in |
