Fifth Flight

Today I made another flight to simply feel-out the airplane. I climbed to about 3500 feet and just flew around. After nearly an hour I came back in and did more practice landings. It appears that I need to be over the threshold at about 80 miles per hours to get a good landing. The Sonex really descends much faster than the Savage – I’ll have to get used to that.

So far my landings have been nothing to write home about, but at least I haven’t broken or bend anything so far!

Another thing that will take some getting used to is that I have to pay more attention to the throttle because angle of attach really has an effect on the number of RPMS I’m turning. I set the throttle to 2800 one minute, not realizing that I’m in a slight climb, then I look back a few seconds later and I’m turned 3100 RPMs.

Also, I aborted one of my take offs because the engine started sputtering a little and I thought that I was having the same problems that I had with the gascolator installed. So I taxied back to the hangar and ran the engine a bit and it still would sputter every once in awhile, but then I noticed that I had the mixture control pulled out a little. Pushed the throttle full rich and it again ran great.
