Today, I finished up the last few assembly things that needed to be done. I installed the last few remaining cotter pins and ensured that all the pins are properly installed. When everything was completed I pushed the plane out to the gas pumps and filled it up for the first time. While filling up the tank, I ‘calibrated’ the electronic fuel gauge on the Enigma. Since I knew that the fuel tank was empty, I was able to calibrate the fuel gauge by setting the fuel gauge to read what the gas pump read. The Enigma has you set the reading it obtains from the sender for certain fuel levels, like 3.3, 6.6 and 10.1 gallons into the software and it extrapolates for the fuel levels between these discrete values. It was pretty simple to do. We filled the tank to the absolute top, and when I picked up the tail to swing the plane around, I dumped some fuel out the vent tube. Also, after I started the engine I simply shut it down using the key, and failed to lean, or turn the fuel valve off, so I spilled more fuel. Checklist anyone? At the end of the day, I taxied around just a little – was a cool feeling. |
