Brief Description:    Started AeroVee 0573
I spent the past few nights working on the ignition wiring. First I incorrectly thought (where I got this idea I have no clue) that the secondary ignition was wired just like the primary (ground de-energizes it and an open circuit lets it function). So I ended up ordering and installing a relay to get the Secondary ignition working.

Then I discovered that I had a short circuit on the Primary ignition. I found that one of the lugs on the Ignition module was touching the mounting strap, shorting it out. So I fixed both of those issues on Friday night and was ready to start the AeroVee on Saturday morning.

Saturday morning, I set the brakes, tied the Airplane to my 4-wheeler and trailer – which just happened to be close by and gave her a try. After maybe 10 seconds on the starter AeroVee number 0573 sprang to life. At first she didn’t run well at all, but I discovered that leaning her out made her run much better so that meant the needle was set too rich. After a few adjustments, (maybe 3/4 of a turn) she started running much better. I did have a minor oil leak and a bigger fuel leak. In both cases I had installed 1/8” NTP plugs to plug holes, one in the crank case and one in the gascolator – both leaked. To fix both, I replaced the 1/8” NTP plugs with bolts, washers, and gaskets and the leaks stopped. I don’t know why both of the plugs I installed leaked; maybe they were the wrong type? I don’t know; the AeroVee assembly instructions specifically called out the NTP plug.

I still need to adjust the timing and the AeroInjector more to get her running better on both ignition systems and at a lower idle setting. Right now she idles well down to about 1000 RPM and I think she should go down to about 850. The maximum RPM I went to was about 3100, just for a few seconds. The whole while the oil pressure was over 40 PSI and the CHTs never went anywhere near their limits. Perhaps having the cowling off helped keep her cool.

It was really cool seeing the AeroVee run and run well!!
