Fuel filler door |
|
|
Tonight I worked on the fuel filler door. I didn’t have any more pulled flush rivets so I used solid flush rivets to attach the fuel door to the hinge. Everything has been cut and drilled and is clecoed in place as I wait for my order from Wicks to arrive with more pulled, flush rivets. I don’t want to try to use solid rivets to connect the hinge to the cowling fiberglass. One thing I noticed is that the cover is kind of kinked; it will warp into two different shapes, depending on how it’s moved. Hopefully I can find a way to stiffen it up. One thing I didn’t really like about the cover is that (as per the plan) the cover is not centered over the line where the cowl is split – it’s off to one side a little. Even though it is to plans, it still looks like I measured wrong and it now is off to one side. Also, this is my first time using the Southco fasteners and I’m not sure I like them. It’s hard to tell if the male part is inserted enough into the female part, or too much. Plus when I do get the thing to ‘latch’ it isn’t very secure. The least little bump causes it to release, which would really suck at 197 MPH! So I may look into different methods of securing the fuel filler door (as well as securing the cowling to the fuselage along the top). Maybe I should use nut plates!!!! |
