Yesterday was the annual "Thunder on the Lakeshore Airshow" at the Manitowoc, Wisconsin airport, (MTW) and while there I got a chance to talk with a couple of other Sonex Builders. I met Jim Carlson, who is scratch building Sonex 112 and Chico and his son (I can't remember his name) who has just completed flying off the required 40 hours on Sonex 1007. This is the Sonex I saw at last year's air show, but I didn't get to talk to the builder then. They really did a nice job on their Sonex, using flush rivets over the entire airframe. While chatting with Chico and his son, I mentioned that I needed to find a 14MM X 1.5 tap to tap a cover to mount the engine oil temperature sender, and I wasn't too excited to buy one (for $45) to tap one hole. This morning, I hear a knock on the door and there stands Chico’s son, with a 14MM x 1.5 tap! What a couple of nice guys. He wanted to see my flip-back canopy so I showed him that and we talked Sonex for a half hour or so. He also gave me a couple of tips that they saw - all good information. So, before he left, I drilled out and tapped the cover and all was well. While talking with him I learned that he and his dad were having problems with the ‘Sonex burps’ and was not having any success finding a fix. Unfortunately, neither he nor his father was internet savvy and never heard of the Sonex group on Yahoo. So in an attempt to pay them back for loaning me the tap, I went to the Sonex group and copied a whole bunch of builder posts of what they did to fix their “Sonex Burp”. It ended up being about 10 pages of posts, hopefully it will help Chico and his son fix their burp problem. |
