Scarf joint |

Selecting timber for the rear spar, lower cap (3/4" x 5/8") I realized I had cut a few feet off the longest piece available for the job. In order to get back to the full length it was necessary to create a scarf joint at a 10 degree angle. The jig is really simple. Cut a scrap piece of 140mm x 45mm timber with the mitre saw set at at 10 degrees. Return the mitre saw angel back to 0 degrees and clamp the scrap jig. Place the 3/4" x 5/8" cap against the jig, hold and cut. Repeat on the other piece and they join together perfectly straight. The scarf must be supported so I have made it to join over a 3/4" x 3/4" vertical riser. Before applying epoxy resin to both surfaces a small nail was driven through then removed temporarily. With epoxy coating the surfaces, the nail was the tapped in to stop the joint sliding apart as clamping pressure was applied. |
