Bought a die grinder (on sale at Northern Tools) and a couple cutoff wheels. Got a length of flat steel bar and cut two 1.5 inch pieces. They are taped together and held behind the hinge lugs against the rivets. Then I can fit the rivet squeezer in without crushing the lugs.
