Next up was to start work on the left fuel tank by fitting the attach z-brackets. I'll be using the "Checkoway" method, which basically offsets the z-brackets slightly for ease of installation, and locates them firmly to the spar before drillng any baffle attach holes. I started out by positioning the center bolt hole on one flange of each z-bracket. This hole on the most inboard bracket is located 1/16" AWAY from the flange centerline to allow a socket to be used to torque the bolts for final installation. The other 6 z-brackets have this hole located 1/16" TOWARD the flange, which has the effect of moving the rivet holes that much farther from the bracket web to allow more room for use of a rivet puller when attaching the tank baffles. After deburring the holes, I bolted each bracket through those holes, making sure they were square to the spar, and made sure they were oriented per the plans. I then back drilled the other two holes in each bracket through the spar. I then positioned nutplates on the 6 outboard brackets, and spot drilled the rivet hole locations, completing these holes only after the brackets were removed from the spar. I countersunk the rivet holes a couple of thousandths deeper than flush to account for primer buildup. I finished a very productive, nearly 12-hour day by edge deburring, scuffing, solvent wiping, and priming all 7 z-brackets for the left tank. |
