Radio troubleshooting |

No major work on the aircraft this weekend, but I did finish the spray booth—with that, I’m ready to finish the cowling, wingtips and control surface fairings. I used a wrought iron lawn chair as a test article in order to check the functionality of the booth, and while it was drying I pulled the RV out onto the ramp to do a little testing of the radios. Since this was the first time that I had been able to use the radios outside of the hangar, I wasn’t sure what to expect with regards to reception capabilities, but I was really pleased when the first traffic call I heard came in from over five miles away. I also tested the shielding of the strobe system by turning on the strobes while listening on the radio—no interference whatsoever. I did have a bit of a challenge initially as the #2 radio was not working, evidenced by a big red X on the PFD and MFD, so I dropped the unit and tried it out on the #1 harness to ensure I didn’t have a radio problem. Once I was sure that both boxes were working properly, I reinstalled #2 and checked all connections carefully. Both radios worked normally upon power up, so I really don’t know what the issue was. Hope I don’t have an electrical gremlin in there somewhere… |
