About 30 hours ago, I had made strut boots out of naugahyde, but unfortunately, they were starting to crack from oil and heat exposure. I went on a search for material similar to that used for Cessna steering rod boots, and eventually found out McFarlane's would sell me their silicone impregnated Kevlar/fiberglass cloth material P/N CFSK0215X502J03 and Tex 120 diameter .020" Kevlar thread. The material is expensive, $135/yard and suitable, but the Tex 120 thread is too thick for my 1950's Singer. At www.thethreadexchange.com, I found some Tex 60 .0099" diameter Kevlar thread, which did work (23 lb test). I then made another set of boots using my previous templates, and installed same. It turns out a stapler works pretty good for provisional fixation of seams, and the staples are easy to remove. Hopefully, this is the last time I have to do this for a long time.
