Fabricated COMM antenna doublers |
|
|
After doing some research and thinking, I decided on the following antenna locations: Marker Beacon - left of center in front of main wing spar bulkhead, COMM 1 & 2 - under rear seat near front left and right outboard bays, Transponder - right of center in front of baggage bulkhead, NAV/GS - cat whiskers in tailcone, ELT - in front of VS, and GPS - dorsal above overhead console. With that in mind, I began with the COMM antennae. I cut 5.75" squares of .025 for doubler material. I bent a 5/8" flange on one side and put it against the inboard rib of the outboard bay. I then marked the outline of the outboard rib and trimmed the plate slightly inside the mark. I then re-clecoed the bottom skin and placed the doubler against the skin. I used an angle drill to drill four #30 holes spaced 1.5" through the flange into the inboard rib. After that, I drilled the outboard edge through the existing skin rivet holes. Repeat for the other side. I then marked a hole 1.5" from the inboard ribs rivets and 2" back from the seat bulkhead and drilled it 5/8". Using a COMM antenna as a template, I placed the connector in the hole and positioned the antenna, then drilled the screw holes. Once the other side was done, I removed the skin to clean up the chips and deburr all the parts. |
