Riveted both HS Spars |
|
|
Today I riveted the stiffeners to the two horizontal stabilizer (HS) spars. Most of the prep work was completed prior to priming, but I ran into a few issues: The flush rivets didn't sit all the way in - most likely due to primer filling some of the hole - and so I had to re-countersink every flush rivet hole to get the rivets to sit flush. I ran out of a certain length of rivet. Actually, I had just one rivet remaining. I took that rivet, lined it up with the next longer size, marked the longer rivets, and cut them to size. I then took the newly cut tips to my scotchbrite grinding wheel to shave off the sharp edges. I now had more correctly sized rivets! The four bolts that hold the center elevator bracket have a torque specification. I have a torque wrench that I haven't used yet, so I looked up the specs. For this bolt, I need 28 inch-pounds of torque. I set the wrench, then found that the small socket size on it will not take any socket heads in my toolbox. The bolts are sitting loosely until I get an adapter for my torque wrench. All the rivets in these spars could be squeezed instead of using the pneumatic rivet gun, so I brought them inside and squeezed them all. |
