VS Substructure Deburring and Dimpling |
|
|
I spent this morning finishing all of the deburring and dimpling of the ribs and spars. This was the first time I got to use my pneumatic squeezer so I played around a bit on some scrap before I started on the parts. I also got a chance to use my Cleaveland substructure dimples. The difference is that these dimples create a 0.007 in. deeper dimple than the ones for the skin. It gives you a slightly better fit when riveting and almost no discernable gap between the parts. The only tricky part with the dimpling was getting the forwardmost dimples in the VS-706 tip closeout rib. There is very limited space and the squeezer didn't fit. Fortunately, Cleaveland included a close quarters dimpling tool for this very situation. It's two small dimples pulled with a pop rivet gun using a common nail as a mandrel. The resulting dimple is not quite as good as the standard dimple set creates, but it's good enough. |
