Fitting tail spring mount & aft bottom skin |
|
|
I have delayed drilling of the cockpit rails and the set back support until I get a second opinion on my fit problem. In the interim, however, I have skipped ahead to the tail spring mount and some other miscellaneous tasks. After final drilling the nutplate holes in the aft side skins and match drilling the rudder stops I tackled the tail spring weldment. The aft bottom skins were removed to get access to the F-811 bulkhead for marking the proper elevation of the installed tail spring mount. The mount was then clecoed to the F-812 bulkhead and the assembly reinstalled. I made a couple shims from a discarded fuel tank access plate (excess part after converting one tank to inverted feed), inserted between the weldment and F-811, and clamped. Getting the spacers inserted, the mount positioned properly, and clamped took a little time since there isn't much room to work in the tail cone area. It took a mirror to see the elevation mark previously placed on F-811 to line up the tail spring weldment. Finally, the bulkhead, spacers, and weldment were match drilled to #30. |
