Tie Downs part #5 |
|
|
Not a happy camper. After completing the spacers and tie-downs, I deburred them, scotchbrited, cleaned, primed, and then carefully marked each one of them, orientation, location, and so on. After priming the pieces and then riveting the spacers to the tie-downs, I put them in place...NOTHING lined up....I couldn’t figure it out. I tapped everything down, clecoed as I drilled, and so on. I did a post mortem and identified the spacers were perfectly drilled as far as the bolt holes in the spar, but when the tie-down went on, only the top original guide hole lined up. I realized the problem with both of the tie-downs or W-731s. When I moved the bottom up ever so slightly, the holes eventually lined up. So, while I was drilling, the bottom of the tie-down was moving out as it wasn't clamped down tight enough...AGH! Ordered 2 new AEX 7 1/2 inches long, and some aluminum bar to be safe, along with 20 new K1000-3 nutplates... Lesson learned...apply lots of force and bolt the damn hole down after drilling! Onto the rear spar until the replacements come. No harm done, except around $20. |
